Cathedral Church of Saint Nicholas

The construction of the Cathedral of St. Nicholas in Sremski Karlovci began in 1758 at the instigation of Karlovac Metropolitan Pavle Nenadović, according to plans drawn up in Vienna, on the site of the old church from Turkish times. In 1760, the tower and cupola were built, according to the project of Zaharij Orfelin, and the church was completely completed in 1762.
The Cathedral Church of Saint Nicholas in Sremski Karlovci is one of the most important temples of the Serbian Orthodox Church and has enormous religious significance for Serbia.
The temple also has great cultural and historical significance. The Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments of Vojvodina has categorized the Cathedral Church as a cultural asset of exceptional importance, because in it, in addition to frescoes, paintings by Paja Jovanović and other valuable religious and artistic objects, there are also two relics - parts of the relics of the second Serbian archbishop, Saint Arsenij of Sremac, and the Miraculous icon of the Most Holy Mother of God of Bezdinska.
